Best Paper Award: Dr. Ben Fry, from RS Clare & Co, represented SITOLUB at ELGI’s 35th AGM

Dr. Ben Fry, from our partner RS Clare & Co, attended the 35th Annual General Meeting of ELGI and represented SITOLUB remarkably well. He gave a compelling presentation about the project, which was the base for his paper, that won this year’s Best Paper Award

Advancing Safe and Sustainable Lubricants: Insights from Dr. Ben Fry's SiToLub Presentation

We’re excited to share key takeaways from Dr. Ben Fry’s insightful presentation on the SiToLub project, “Simulation Tools for the Design of Safe and Sustainable Lubricants”. The presentation showcased the role of innovation in developing the next generation of lubricants that meet stringent environmental and safety standards.

The Imperative of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD)

Dr. Fry began by highlighting the EU’s commitment to net-zero aspirations through initiatives like the European Green Deal and the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability. Central to this is the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, which mandates a holistic view of a chemical’s entire life cycle, from hazardous properties to socio-economic assessments. The presentation emphasized the growing need for effective lubricant chemistries that anticipate and comply with tightening global regulations, such as the CLP (classifying, labelling, and packaging) regulations.

SiToLub: A Digital Tool for Future-Proof Formulations

The SiToLub project, funded under HORIZON-CL4-2023-RESILIENCE-01, aims to address this challenge by creating a cutting-edge digital tool. This platform will empower lubricant formulators to develop products that follows to SSbD guidelines through advanced computational pre-assessments.

Best Paper Award

Dr. Ben authored a comprehensive paper, “SiToLub – Simulation Tools for the Design of Safe and Sustainable Lubricants,” detailing the project’s aims. The paper outlines how this tool will accelerate and enhance the formulation of new greases and lubricants, presenting initial results from various models.
