The Social Impact of Lubricant Innovation:
Assessing sustainability for all

What makes a lubricant truly sustainable?

  • Lower friction?
  • A smaller carbon footprint?
  • Better biodegradability?

 

All these matters. But they do not tell the whole story.

 

A product is not defined only by what it does, how efficiently it performs or how much carbon it emits. Its impact is also shaped by the people and communities it affects throughout its life cycle.

Historically, products were assessed mainly through performance, quality and cost. As sustainability gained importance, attention expanded to energy use, emissions and resource consumption. Yet the social dimension has often received less attention.

The sustainability of a lubricant is also connected to its impacts on people: those who extract its raw materials, manufacture its additives, formulate and transport it, use it in machines and manage it at the end of its life. Innovation therefore has a social footprint as well as an environmental one.

That is why SiToLub looks beyond technical performance and environmental indicators. A responsible assessment must consider environmental, economic and social effects together, because progress in one area can sometimes create new risks elsewhere.

The story behind the finished product

A lubricant may perform perfectly in use and still be linked to social risks hidden further up the value chain. Raw-material extraction, chemical production, formulation and end-of-life treatment may involve unsafe working conditions, inadequate wages, excessive working time, forced labour, gender inequality or weak protection of local communities.

These conditions are rarely visible to the person using the final product. They may know how the lubricant performs in a gearbox or production line, but not how its ingredients were sourced or under which conditions they were produced.

Social sustainability therefore asks us to look behind the label. Within SiToLub, this includes indicators such as fair salary, equal opportunities, forced-labour risk, working time and occupational health and safety. It also includes positive effects, such as skills creation, technological development and knowledge-intensive employment.

Sustainable – but for whom?

Innovation nearly always involves trade-offs. A new formulation may reduce energy consumption, a bio-based component may improve biodegradability, and a longer-lasting lubricant may reduce maintenance and extend machinery lifetime. Nonetheless, an apparently greener solution may increase dependence on scarce materials, require more complex production conditions or shift costs and risks to suppliers, workers or communities. A product is not fully sustainable when one improvement simply moves the burden somewhere else.

The Social Life Cycle Assessment helps make these effects visible. By examining different stakeholder groups across the entire value chain, it can identify social hotspots and support a more balanced comparison between alternatives. This is especially useful early in the innovation process, while materials, formulations and supply chains can still be changed.

 

More than avoiding harm

The social dimension is not only about preventing negative impacts. Lubricant innovation can also create positive value through training, technical assistance, knowledge transfer, local entrepreneurship and new professional skills. For example, companies can help workers handle products more safely, support maintenance professionals in developing new capabilities and improve access to technical knowledge. These actions can strengthen small enterprises and local service networks that depend on reliable machinery and maintenance.

This does not mean turning every technical project into a philanthropic programme. It means using the knowledge and resources already present in the business to create value beyond the immediate sale of a product. Initiatives linked to a company’s core expertise are often more credible and more durable than isolated acts of corporate charity.

Good for society, good for business

Social engagement is sometimes treated as a communication exercise. In reality, trust, skills and stable relationships directly influence how companies operate. Employees may be more engaged when their work contributes to meaningful outcomes. Stronger relationships with suppliers, customers and communities can improve resilience, reduce conflict and support long-term cooperation.

The social impact of lubricant innovation therefore has two sides. One is analytical: identifying risks, hotspots and possible burden shifting. The other is practical: designing training, business models and community initiatives that turn technical knowledge into shared value. When these two sides come together, lubricant innovation becomes more than a technical upgrade. It can contribute to safer products, stronger value chains and more inclusive industrial development.

In the end, innovation succeeds not only when a product performs better, but when the people and communities connected to it are better off too.
